Is it bad to take too many vitamins?

Yes. Too much of a vitamin can indeed be detrimental to your health.

Depends on what vitamins. Certain vitamins, such as any B vitamin can be taken in large doses but not cause any harm. Because some vitamins are water soluble and others are fat soluble.

I believe the majority of vitamins are water soluble, and therefore your body will digest the what it requires and excrete the rest that is unnecessary. Fat soluble vitamins, however, will be held onto during digestion instead of being excreted. Thus those can become potentially fatal at some point.

Your body can only absorb so much of a substance at a given time, so taking more than 100% of the daily recommended value of a vitamin may just be a waste. Taking too much, even of something good for you like vitamins can be harmful if your body cannot rid itself of the excess easily. A build up of calcium, for example, can cause kidney stones. Ouch.
