What are the primary colors?

bobbonew: What are they and how/why were they made the 'primary colors'?

There are three. Red, blue, and yellow. I cannot remember why they are primary, but I believe it had something to do with finding these colors naturally in the environment. Art class was a long time ago and I did not care to really pay attention.

Secondary colors are orange, green and purple. They are the half and half mixes of the primary colors. Woo big surprise, huh?

Actually violet :P

ROYGBIV
Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Indigo-Violet

Would that trend not suggest Violet is primary as well?

ROYGBIV = Rainbow colors =/= colors of the color wheel.

Sorry, but while this presents certain logical points, it is irrelevant information.

The rainbow colors stem out of white light. How people percieve colors is another thing entirely.

Although, some people think the primary colors are red, blue and green. I just don't know why.

And plus, indigo is sometimes disregarded because it is usually indistinguishable from blue.

For an artist - red, yellow, blue. For an engineer - red, green, blue. (Think of the old TV sets!) The reason there is only three is because all colours can be made from these three 'primary' colours (using either green or yellow).

The primary colors in art are red blue and yellow. They are primary because you cannot mix any colors to attain them unlike the secondary colors which can be attained by mixing the primary colors. (ex: green is made from blue and yellow)

Three primary colors. Red, blue, yellow.

They are called primary because you can combine these three colors along with white and black to create tints and shades of all the colors.

There are also secondary colors (orange, green, violet) and tertiary colors.
