What happens to our sun when it dies?

bobbonew: I know it will go supernova, but what happens from there; I don't think its large enough to form a black hole.

That's probably it, it goes supernova and then once that's done, just be nothing.

Our sun is a relatively small star in the middle of its ~10 billion year life. As it nears the end of its cycle it will start to develop into a red giant. As this happens it will grow in size and the rate at which it loses mass will accelerate. Mercury and Venus will most certainly be engulfed, possibly Earth but probably not Mars. The Sun will then form into a white dwarf about half as massive as it's current size. This could in turn then lose its outer layers and form a planetary nebula. I have heard that theoretically white dwarfs will turn into black dwarfs when the expend all the remaining fuel. Our sun is not big enough to go supernova.

It will go orange giant, then collapse into a dwarf until its burnt out.

Our sun is much too small to supernova. It only has the mass to white dwarf and eventually black dwarf.

The sun will most likely turn into a white dwarf, too small to form a black hole. Orange giant might be a possibilty...

but who knows?
