Why doesn't the US use the metric system like the rest of the world?

There's just no force behind the conversion. At one time there was the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 but was later closed after the Metric Board, their primary support, obviously, was terminated in 1982.

We'll get there some day. =/

I ain't hatin'!! It cost NASA ergo the American Taxpayer (YOU) $200 million when the 2001 Mars probe failed due to Top scientists not converting European Standard Metric calculations into US Imperial figures. If the US insists on being stubborn then they could at least make sure they get things right!

I remember reading about that. Didn't it have something to do with somebody not writing their units down and somebody read it as metric when it should have been something else?

Scientific calculations around the world are calculated in Metric Units as an industry standard (SI) so when the European Space Agencies provided their work for the probe it was done in Metric. The American Scientists failed to convert these figures when implementing them in the hardware of the probe. School boy error.

Eventually we will adopt the popular metric system. It's just that there is no REAL reason to change yet.

There is most certainly a REAL reason to change it. Most, if not all of the rest of the world uses it, and yet we're too moronic to switch to a system that completely makes more sense.

Liberia, Myanmar and the United States are the only countries not to have adopted SI.

Thank you for telling me, I was wondering what the others were. :)

No worries ;)

But if the USA switched to the metric system, then our education system would never need to bother teaching children conversions to it! What possibly would children learn in school then? We would need to completely upgrade our system, and now honestly, who wants that?

Perhaps change isn't good in all scenarios but, in this case, once we got used to it it'd be much more friendly for everyone. Why use an outdated system when we shouldn't need too?

I hope you know I was being sarcastic. . . I know, it is hard to translate that across the internet.

The metric system is an unnecessary encumbrance, and one that should be tossed out the window with the rest of the garbage. It has no history behind it, unlike the English system. I'd rather walk an English mile than a French kilometer.

Furthermore, the Fahrenheit scale is much more precise and useful than the stoopid centigrade scale. Think about it: on the Fahrenheit scale, there are 180 degrees between water freezing and water boiling. On the Centigrade, only 100 degrees separate the two. Fahrenheit is therefore more precise and informative.
