I go to Florida (almost) every year, and I've never experienced an earthquake. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but I'd say it's quite rare.

Of course it's possible. But if I'm not mistaken, the west coast sits on more fault lines, the boarders between tectonic plates. When those plates move, and rub or slip against one another, it has been known to cause earthquakes and tsunamis (like the one in the Indian Ocean around Christmastime a few years ago).

Very rarely, and fortunately small.

In Kentucky we have a major fault line somewhere. I have felt maybe one or two earthquakes. They were fairly minor. Just kind of like, "Huh? What was that?" Later I flip on the news and they say that an earthquake happened. "Oh so that was what that was."

I suppose the friction over here is not as bad as the stuff that occurs in the west coast. Although, it is said in the earlier 1800s there was a large earthquake possibly at a magnitude of over 8 that occured on this faultline. Also, in 1980 I think we had one that was around 5 something. The major damage tends to occur in the very southern west corner, as that is where the faultline lies.

There are three different types of fault lines. California has areas with the most dramatic type where the plates are pushing against each other. The other two types can be described as sliding along each other or pulling away from each other.

Here's a metaphor... a quake on the East Coast is like when you're parking at the mall and your mirror hits the mirror on the car beside you. A quake in California is like when a Hummer is parking in a spot and the drive didn't notice that there was a Smart Car already in the space.
