Wikipedia says in a tropical rain forest there are four main layers, emergent, canopy, understory and forest floor.

If you dissect it further, each layer can be split in two.

Or if you want waste your life, you can classify each altitude as a layer. This is helpful if you are studying birds and they seem to prefer certain heights over others.


I think permaculture identifies 7 layers

canopy (tall trees), small trees, shrubs/bushes, low growing plants (herbs), ground level/horizontal vines, roots, and climbing vines

Emergent, Canopy, Understory, Shrub Layer, Forest Floor and subterranean.
