The ocean is blue because light passes through the water, and all the colors are reflected except one, blue.
I'm not sure about the sky, but I assume it's the same.

The sky is blue due to a phenomenom known as Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through however the shorter wavelength (blue) light is absorbed by the gas molecules then radiated in different directions giving the overall blue tinge. Water owes its intrinsic blueness to selective absorption in the red part of its visible spectrum.

Then why aren't clouds also blue?

Tollenaar's Avatar

Clouds are of a separate chemical and physical composition than the 'sky.' Clouds are just happy little fluff puffs of water.

By that logic steam should also be blue. And that's creepy.

Umm.... God made it that way.

Maybe it's because there wasn't enough blue in the world and its because blue is a pretty color. Or just cause it wants to be blue. Chyeahh.

If it were green it would look like the grass.
If it were yellow it would look like the sun.
If it were white where would the clouds float?
If it were purple or black it would be night.
If it were red and orange it would be a sunrise or sunset.
Doesn't leave many choices.

Besides blue skies are the best.

Thanks LMC.
Just thought I'd toss in a little lightheartedness.

No need to be serious all the time.

the ocean makes the sky blue
