What is a leap year? |

A leap year is a year with one extra day, added to February, so that it has 29 days. |

Expansion: leap years were created to compensate for the slight imperfection in time it takes for the earth to complete its revolution and rotation around the sun. |

|
It takes the Earth 365.25 (that's 365 and 1/4) days (periods of 24 hours, of course) to revolve around the sun, so every four years, we add a day to make up for the lost time.

I would say the imperfection was in our calander not the other way about. The Mayans seemed to manage just fine.
