Yeah, it's safe. Just be careful that you don't try to exit the car if it is struck by lightning. You are safe because you are inside the vehicle (just like people in a plane are safe if it's struck by lightning), but if you try to leave or touch something conductive connected to the exterior of the vehicle right after being struck you will be screwed. I think it takes about 15 minutes for the charge on the vehicle to wear off after being struck.

The rubber in the tires should be able to save you, in this case. Didn't know about the length of the charge though; thanks, Moonrise.

Yeah, you're safe as long as you're inside because of (I believe I've got this right) Gauss' Law. Essentially it states that the charge of an enclosed object is evenly distributed among the outer surface of the object.

Safest place to be as long as you don't touch the metal inside the car. =]

As someone has said, the rubber in the tires make it safe. As rubber does not conduct electricity, it should be unlikely for the vehicle to be struck. (I mean, it is possible...) But even with possibilities, the electricity should not affect you as long as you stay within the internal area of the automobile.

Yeah you're right, the rubber on the tyres arent affected by the electricity but if the car is struck you're safe as long as you don't touch anything metal in the car.
