How do clear 3D glasses work?

Nate: I'm color blind so, needless to say, 3D movies have never been something I could enjoy. However, just the last year or so they've been using Cyan and Magenta colored glasses to be more color blind friendly.

I'm going to see a 3D movie tomorrow and a friend I'm going with stated that they no longer use color glasses and that the lenses are now clear. I can understand altering the location of the different color channels to get the 3D perspective when using colored lenses but this clear lenses concept mystifies me. Anybody know how this works?

You're colorblind? Man, it must be hard to use Photoshop!

I'm not entirely sure, but I would assume it somehow changes the way the light reflects off of the glasses.

I'm not fully color blind, of course, I just see specific colors a bit differently.

The current 3D glasses still use red and blue lenses. Simply put, it's harder to see the red and blue in them. I've somehow managed to see red and blue bands if I looked at certain plastics at an angle.

I have seen glasses that were cross polarized. The lenses looked grey, not much different than sunglasses.I don't know they are being used by the studios these days.

en. wikipedia. org/ wiki / RealD_Cinema
The projector alternately projects the right-eye frame and left-eye frame, and circularly polarizes these frames, clockwise for the right eye and counterclockwise for the left eye. A push-pull electro-optical modulator called a ZScreen is placed immediately in front of the projector lens to switch polarization. The audience wears disposable circularly polarized glasses to make sure each eye sees only "its own" picture, even if the head is tilted.

Using the RealD glasses for Coraline was the only time my red/green colorblind husband had 3D work for him. It's exciting. We hesitate to get the 3D DVD, because the glasses may not work even half as well. It's been cool to see a few 3D movies in theaters now that we know it works for him

exactly right, its due polarised lenses on the glasses, sometimes they're different though, im not entirely sure. my thought of it was that there are two polarised images slightly out of phase of each other, these images are modulated at 90 degree angles (the light waves coming off each image can only be seen at one form of 90 degree..)
EG
the left picture's light waves are polarised vertically and the right pictureslight waves are horizontal....
the plastic real-d glasses lenses are polarised in the same way (i managed to work this out by playing with two pairs)
this therefor gives you an image that appears to be separated from its environment
