How can you or is it even possible to overdose on water?

Yes, its possible. You can literally drown yourself if you drink an excessive amount of water. Too much water will disturb the balance of electrolytes in your body, basically diluting the salt in your bloodstream, causing your brain to swell up. The chance for water intoxication increases greatly if you drink too much water without urinating.

That's crazy! One would think you would actually vomit the water up if you had too much just like anything else.

That's why it is better for athletes to drink Gatorade, or a drink with sodium/electrolytes in it. Because if you drink nothing but water for an extended period of time, (especially during a workout when you lose electrolytes/sodium through sweat) your sodium levels in your body will sharply decrease and will cause you to pass out or die. I remember a marathon runner a few years back died from this same exact reason.

College students at UC Chico died by overdrinking water (some frat thing). The cells in your body actually burst from absorbing too much. =/

Many of the deaths attributed by the papers in the UK to ecstasy are actually due to the victims drinking too much water.

See for some reason I thought it was the opposite, and the ecstasy made you not think you were thirsty and you died due to mass dehydration and high fever gone unchecked, again, due to lack of water. I must be thinking of another drug, or simply getting things backwards.=/

Yes I can definitely confirm ecstasy has the "drink too much" affect. If I remember correctly too it might even be difficult to urinate whilst on it as well?

It could be both in a way. Some people are perhaps over compensating for what the anticipated affect would be, if you know what I mean?
