The best thing you can do is to not have the vents covered, and to keep the room at a decent temperature.

Cooling fans will help just slightly in that they keep the ventilation of the laptop running a bit better. Upgrading your laptops ram and getting ram sticks that run cooler also helps significantly.

I always thought I had a lot of RAM... Is 4GBs a lot?

4GB is all you need, yeah. You may have RAM that just runs really hot, though. Do you know where the ram is on your laptop? Mine is right under the keyboard. If you know, check the area around the RAM when your computer's running hot and see if that's the source.

I checked, and the RAM didn't seem to be the hottest.
I'm not sure what it was, but the small icon that was there, and the size and shape of the panel lead me to believe it was the hard drive.

Hard drives don't get very hot at all, so that doesn't seem quite right. The processor or video card could be near the hard drive though, I suppose.

You think you could tell me your computer make/model and specify where on the computer it's getting hot? I could look around to see what it is.

It's an HP G60.
Most of the heat seems to be coming from right where the RAM panel and the hard drive panel meet.

Ok,it's likely radiating off the RAM but it could be the video card too. Problem is that I can't get any views of the HP G60 from the bottom so I can't really tell. Furthermore, it seems I can't even get an internal design diagram of it. Hmmm, it was much easier with my Dell. =/

Anyways, your best bet is to simply keep the laptop slightly levitated while in use.

Couldn't the CPU also be a likely cause?

CPU certainly contributes but with the way computers are designed these days they really aren't worked that hard unless you have low RAM or are using very intensive processes.

Ice.

Okay, no, do not use ice to cool off your laptop. Really, the best thing to do is try to keep the temperature of the room you are using it in pretty cool. Also, removing clutter around the laptop so better ventilation may be kept is highly recommended.

Although, really, the way a laptop's design is compacted, it is harder to keep them cool in comparison to a desktop.

Don't sit it on a soft surface, such as your lap...
Try a desk, or put some kind of hard cover book (My high school yearbook is perfect) underneath it.
