Why does the sky turn red in some sunsets?

I always heard that it was due to the angle of refraction.

It is more of a direct view of the sun's light so it is in part to do with the angle as mentioned by felixthecat. When it is high up in the sky it gets more scattered by other particles such as dust but lower down the beam is more direct.

All the above. Throw in some dust and or pollution and you got it.

also, it seems red when I've been swimming for too long and the chlorine level is too high. lol.
