Why do you get "brain freeze" from drinking something cold too quickly?

bobbonew: I have always wondered this!

Rapid cooling and warming of blood vessels in the upper palate of the mouth cause brain freeze, because the cold dilates the blood vessels, causing pain receptors to trigger in that area and send pain signals to your brain.

I saw on television that it was because of rapid cooling of the blood vessels in the forehead, which causes blood flow to slow. When the blood flow resumes, (this is where my memory gets a bit foggy) the blood continues rushing and the rapid speed is sent to the brain as "pain".

its when your ice cream or cold beverage is coming in contact with the roof of your mouth(palate). It triggers nerves that give the brain the impression of a very cold environment. To heat up the brain again, blood vessels start to swell, which causes the headache-like pain for approx. 30 seconds
