Is the file type "gif" pronounced with a hard g or soft g?Parasyte: I read that the creators said it was a soft g, like "Jif", the peanut butter brand, but I've never heard anyone say it like that. |

The creators did indeed mean it to have a "j" sound, but no one else says it that way. The "G" in gif is for "graphics" so what did they expect? And since the word is widely used and the creators have no real control on how it is pronounced, only an oddly pedantic person would now pronounce the word as "jif". Supposedly every now and then one of the gif's creators has a hissy fit about this, but too bad for them. |
