Out of all the species of animals on earth, which is the most populated?

Parasyte: Sorry, I can't quite find the words for it.

I have no idea, but are you talking about only mammals, animals in general (fish, birds, etc) or all life, like insects & bugs too?

I really admire this question by the way!

Yes, I mean all animals on Earth.

My guess is that it would be some kind of insect, like fire ants or cockroaches, since they multiply by the thousands.

I would guess it would be one of the longest survived, exceptionally social invertebrates like ants. But since you consider insects & invertebrates animals, what about micro-organisms I'm sure they out rank anything here in the visible world.

I would hesitate to include micro-organisms in the Kingdom Animalia. I would say krill, water fleas, and things of that sort. Small, number in the trillions.

What about rats?

I agree with Felix, if you exclude micro-organisms and plant life, then it would definitely be some sort of very small aquatic dwelling creature. The oceans of our plant take up a very great proportion of the area and any creature that lives in it has a much larger range to expand its population.

Good point. Probably some sort of crustacean, but most likely an invertebrate for sure.

Humans?

No possible way. Humans haven't even reached 7 billion.

dude i thort there was like around 7billion people in New York

GexTheLizard's Avatar

There's about 5 million in NYC, and the rest of New York state really isn't that heavily populated.

LiteStyle0o's Avatar

Yeah there are only like 6.5 billion humans on all of the earth. But at the exponential rate we're increasing it won't be much longer before we reach 7 then 8 then 30...

That is true, LS. At current rates of fertility, we may be looking at 100 billion people in the next century, and an impossible 134 trillion by 2250. Though most other animals will be extinct if that is the case, we will be outnumbered still by things like rats, tapeworms, houseflies, and tubifex.

ants have the highest population

Chicken Nugget's Avatar

Perhaps, but ants have like 9000 different species. If you take this knowledge into account, then we are not seeing their population in as great of a number as it is separated from one inclusive family classification and instead into thousands of species groups.

I think a better question would say creature not animal then it could be ants because ants are not animals there insects there is a difference thus it should say creatures.
