Do the characters on 'Family Guy' understand what Stewie is saying?

pandabear: The show doesn't really give a clear answer. Sometimes I think they can understand him but other times, like when he's telling Lois he will kill her, they just ignore him. What's your take on this?

I think it's one of the details of the show that the creators have deliberately vague just to mess with the fans. I recall an episode where at the very end it is shown that the whole episode was being watched by a class and one of the boys remarks, "So do they know what the baby is saying or what?" and then a quick cut to the credits. I think it will never be answered to be honest. Just another reason to watch the show religiously I suppose.

I do remember that episode. It was the Petoria episode where Peter was his own country or w/e. There was another one where Stewie tells Brian that he thought a character was outside of the main cast so they would get the gist of what he was saying.

I truthfully despise the show, but I can appreciate little quirks like this one. Overall, I think it's a dumbed-down or a handful of better animated shows out there.

My thoughts were always that Brian could understand what Stewie said but none of the other family members could understand him. It explains how there is so much interaction between Brian and Stewie but Louis is still oblivious to the matricidal tendencies of her son.

And yet, the family understands the talking dog...

Think of the parallels to Angelica on Rugrats.

When it suits the writers... the family understands the baby. When it does not suit the writers... the family does not understand the baby. Think of it like this: it is a cartoon written by real, live people with real, live conflicts and itches for comedic salutes.

I think different writers for different episodes portray stewie in drastically different ways.

Sometimes he's straight, sometimes he's dead set on being matricidal, and others he's homosexual. Its amusing.

They mostly understand him, but they never take him seriously, like when he threatens to kill Lois.
Except for Brian, he understands everything Stewie says.

I think the family understands a little bit of what he says, but they don't understand that he is a evil genius. That one episode were Louis does find out he is an evil genius and tries to kill him is hilarious, but she still can't really understand Stewie. If I'm correct I think that was a dream episode. The only character that can understand Stewie the most is Brian, because he is a dog. Brian and Stewie are enemies in some episodes, but are best friends in other episodes.

Yes.
Brian definitely does.
They have interesting conversations.
I think the other ones do, but are so stupid they play it off as being the drugs they had taken earlier.

What I want explained is why Louis did nothing when they pulled a map of where to bomb in Europe from her Uterus out her vagina(when Stewie was delivered).
