When did the computer become essential in every home?

pandabear: I know I didn't get a computer in my house until I was about 12 or 13. I had a huge desktop by Gateway, who I don't think even makes computers anymore. I could be wrong about that though.

	No, Gateway still make computers. I've seen their laptops around a fair bit. I'm not absolutely certain about it but I think it really became a staple in the mid to late 90's and exploded at the turn of the millennium. I remember falling in love with the idea of computers when I got a discarded notebook from my mom's work around the age of 8 or 9. Which was around 2000 to 2001

	Gateway merged with HP if im not mistaken. The mid to late 90s was when everyone started going ballistic with PCs. Windows 98 was really the first uniform platform to my knowledge
