Are sugar substitutes bad for your health?

maxpower: My grandfather was diagnosed with brain cancer back in the early '90s and the doctor claimed it was from consuming too much sweet-n-low. This has always led me to believe that all the substitutes are bad for your health.

Not all sugar substitutes are detrimental to one's health. Aspartame is the most harmful if I remember correctly however all studies have been pretty much inconclusive in providing a solid answer. As far as they go though, I'm fairly certain that Sucralose (most commonly known as Splenda) is a safe one.

Not all are bad. As far as I know, Sucrose is the main substance known as Sugar, but Fructose is just as good.

I dunno about what the tests have shown, but I stay away from sugar substitutes and margarine. In my opinion, the body doesn't know what to do with it. If I'm craving sugar, I'm going to let my body have it so I don't seek so many different things to satisfy the craving. Would I rather have half a can of regular soda or a glass (equivalent to a full soda can) of powder drink "sweetened" with an artificial sugar? I'll take the half can of soda. =]

http://www.womentowomen.com/healthyweight/splenda.aspx That's kind of scary.

sugar substitutes have been linked to diabetes due to insulins direct relation to actual sugar and not sugar substitutes... as peep bunnies said your body doesnt know what to do with it... it messes with your insulin levels seeing as your body doesnt need to produce it seeing as you do not have any actual sugar intake... and also substitutes have been known to cause headaches and migrains... so yes... i will take that non diet soda please =]

There have been studies to show that they are in fact worse then what they are replacing.
