Why aren't 11 and 12 considered teens?

Parasyte: They are 2 digit numbers beginning in 1 between 10 and 20.

I do see your point, but I still think they should be considered teens. They fall into all the categories that 13-19 do.

What are you refering to when you say the categories that they fall into?

11 and 12 year olds are considered pre-teens.

Well i agree with dropmonkeys. I always though it was because they have 'teen'at the end...

Eleven and twelve are remnants of the old base twelve numbering system. Thirteen began the next series of numbers; twenty, though, started another group- "two tens". Counting systems changed to base ten, so we are stuck with the mix of two systems.

There is not a specific word set aside for all groups of numbers ranging in periods of ten. Teens refer strictly to numbers with a teen in it. It is just how our language developed when it comes to counting. Other languages have their own quirks when it comes to counting. Our pattern is dumber because our language is dumb and makes too many exceptions for everything.

12 and under are considered pre-teens, 13 - 19 are considered your teens, but some people count 20 as a teen year because you're not really classified as an adult until you're 21.

That's bull. The moment you turn 18 you should be classified as an adult. If you're allowed to go to war, you're an adult.
