What do you think will one day replace oil?

bobbonew: Its no surprise that oil is a finite resource on Earth, one day it will cease to exist and our power needs will keep rising.

So whether it be fusion, solar or some other form of power, what do you guys think will replace it one day?

I think it will probably be a mix of everything that is out there. There is definitely means to harness the power of the sun that I think we should never disregard, but there is a certain point that it won't be enough. Wind energy is definitely viable to a point, as well as harnessing the power of the waves.

I'm not too "in the know" about fusion, but from what I understand it could completely change the way that we get our energy. Not to mention fusion is what has been keeping our sun going for millions of years, that has to say something.

Our energy supply of the future will fundamentally be solely on our location on the planet. Chances are if you live on hilly and mountainous terrain, you're going to get wind power, if you live in a hot and dry area such as Spain or Egypt, you're primary source of energy will be solar power. If you live on the coasts of the UK facing the north sea, you're going to be using Tidal Energy.

It's all flexible and there is no way that when Oil has run out we'll have a sustainable and efficient way of producing energy for the masses. But not flexible enough to the extent where everyone receives the same energy.

Ofcourse, there is always the "ever-so-reliable" Nuclear Power station, but after Chernoble, we need to wise up and make the places extra safe. But is it really all that sustainable?

I think the winning formula is a combination of green technology. What will work in one place will not in another. This is why we have the oil problems we have today - we rely way to much on one source. We need wind turbines where they are most effective, good solar panels where they work best, geothermal heating systems etc. Maybe the question should be how do we dismantle the powerful lobbyists that keep dated and dirty technology in use just to turn a buck?

I think it'll be a combination of wind and solar energy. Just think, if it's sunny out, the solar panels will give you power. If it's cloudy, there's a good chance it'll also be windy, at which point the wind turbines could kick in. These are the cleanest, and cheapest, so I'll have to say they'll be where most, if not all of our power comes from.

Each one has advantages and disadvantages though. For example you're not going to generate as electricity from solar power if you live in the UK. I mean, it'll work but not as effective as if the conditions were right for it to be a primary source of energy. The best bet for the UK (using this as an example because I know of the climatic conditions around the country :P) is either tidal or geothermal. With renewable energy supplies, it quite literally is a case by case scenario.

Foot power. In an over-populated world, footpower will replace oil. China just announced that it was severely cutting back exports of vital rare earths that are needed for electric car technology (among other techs). There is not enough for everyone, and what little there is is disappearing fast.
