What is iPhone tethering?

(Guest): I always hear the term iPhone tethering thrown around with ATT and Verizon trying to sell it for a few bucks a month, but really what is it?

One of the great aspects of the iPhone is its great ability to access the internet. As long as your iPhone is connected to a cellular connection (3G for example) then it can access the internet - and at a decent speed too.

iPhone tethering lets you share that internet connection with your devices like your laptop, netbook or other internet capable devices (there are limits of course to what you can tether your internet connection to). So picture your laptop tethered to your iPhone for its internet connection - that's where the term has come from.

Internet tethering on the iPhone isn't completely issue free - its obviously not as fast as your wired cable internet connection. It also wasn't even available in the United States when Apple first launched the ability - it is now but comes at a cost. You can alternatively jailbreak your iOS device to bypass that limitation, however that application costs a few bucks.

I really like the tethering feature because if the power in my house goes out, my laptop will stay on for about 4 hours and I can just use the iPhones internet connection to keep on working. I can even choose between a wired connection with the sync cable or I can share it via bluetooth. With a jailbroken app I can also turn the iPhone into an entire wifi hotspot and share it to a myriad of devices! Extremely handy!

I don't mind paying for extra data I use for tethering but paying AT$T to suck my money for data I paid once is crazy this is screwing me to the max
That why I jail break
