That's a really interesting questions.
People who were born blind have never viewed reality, so I can't even begin to wonder what their mind's eye is like.
As for people who lost their sight, I think that over time, their mind would phase it out in order to adapt.

i remember watching something about this on tv...don't blind people see colors? like splotches or flashes of color, even tho they dont have sight. maybe their dreams comprise of these things?

I feel like most blind people who have lacked sight from birth would tend to dream in sounds and sensations as they would in thier normal conscious state, becaues if they have never known the sense of sight consciously, they would not be able to in an altered state of consciousness either, and those who had sight at some point in thier lives may dream in either state of sightedness or blindness, or an in between type state.

This question also reminds me of a psychology lesson from a few years back. My professor asked if any of us were bi- or multi-lingual, and if so, what language we dreamt in. A few bilingual students fascinated us with thier answers. Most of them hadn't considered what language they dreamt in before. Some of them said they dreamt in exclusively their native language, some in the language that they spoke with whereever they were currently living, and some depending on who they dreamt about (although some students said the people appearing inside thier dreams always spoke in thier own native tongues, while others spoke in languages they did not know in reality).

This is my favourite question so far. An extra point for that would be good. I really think we need an answer from a blind person. My thought on this is from thinking from their perspective. Totally blind people from birth will still technically have the brains visual capacity and their own (probably enhanced) sense of imagination. I personally think they would dream visually. I have never been able to fly. But I did in a dream once!

I think it would depend on the source of blindness. If it's something to do with they eyes or optic nerve, then I wouldn't be surprised if some blind people experienced some visuals. But, if the occipital lobe of the brain is damaged and that's the source of the blindness, there wouldn't be a way to experience visuals.

I know that some blind people who were once sighted do have visual dreams. But I would think that the amount of detail of the visuals would be determined by the person's experience with sight. If you went blind as a child, the most you would see in your dreams is probably a few shapes and different colors, but if you went blind late in life then you have a life's worth of visual experience to draw on for your dreams.
