Panasonic usually gets the highest ratings for their Plasma tvs. I like to go with companies such as Samsung, Sony, and Westinghouse though (and LCDs :P).

Sony and Samsung are two vell-known companies. Pioneer is or was the leader in plasma TV for a while, but I believe they've been absorbed into Sharp, who should then offer a similar product. Or why not support American industry and buy a Vizio? They're aggressively priced and very decent.

I'm more partial to LCD screens to be honest. My favorite brand is the AQUOS line of tvs by SHARP. My grandfather recently got a 60-something inch one with a 120hz refresh rate. It's amazing and hi-def is stunning on it.

I agree with Samsung, they are great. I'm also going to buy a Vizio once I get the money, and it looks real good.

Vizio is a great quality plasma tv, my friend has one and he loves it.

My Dad is a home theater installer of 20+ years.

Vizios are pieces of crap.

Sony Bravia is the best. If you don't want to pay that much, go with a Samsung.

Vizios have been known to show white streaks across the screen within a couple of months. Please take my advice from an expert on this. Vizio is a waste of money.

I've always been a huge Samsung supporter for their quality products. Right now I'm working on a 24" monitor made by Samsung with a 20,000:1 contrast ratio. Now that's just bragging.

Put me down 600 bucks, though.

I have a Samsung monitor as well. =]

Ya, but 20,000:1 contrast ratio? I have yet to find somebody that beats me. =D

I got mine two years ago so I don't even know what my contrast ratio is. It was a birthday present. =]

Eh, despite mine being so high it's pretty pointless anyway. I mean, unless I'm watching it at night time with my blinds closed and all the lights off, any extra light source will bring it down to a mere 500:1.

But cheers anyway!

You should know those numbers mean nothing, Ecto.

There is no industry standard for contrast ratio. A company could literally make up any number they want for their contrast ratio and no one could say boo-hoo about it because there, well, isn't a standard. Most companies just keep ramping up the number without actually changing much.

Plasma is all but dead. LCD and LED are the way to go.Plasma has some problems that LCD does not.Buy a 1080p 240Hz. LCD,hook up a blu ray,and hang on to your ass.Sony Samsung Sharp are your best bet.Oh and just one more thing Vizio is absolute crap. They are cheap Chinese pieces of junk.I hate to see people getting ripped off buying those turds.Do yourself a favor, save up,and buy a quality product. The inconvenience of poor quality lingers long after the thrill of a bargain is forgotten.

You left out Pioneer, though they're top end only.

LG is a solid brand as well, to be perfectly honest. I have a Sharp Aquos and it's gorgeous. By the way, Plasma TVs are by no means dead. LCDs are simply more versatile and lighter in weight. However, the only real issues with plasma tvs are the weight and the glass screen cover which causes a lot of glare. They generally get richer colors and deeper blacks than LCDs.

This is the first thing I've ever disagreed with you on Moonrise. that's my dad and he's has been doing this for 20+ years. =P

The new LCDs have surpassed plasmas.

New plasmas still have the risk of burning in. The 1080p 240Hz LCDs are so much better than plasmas.

240Hz is absolutely unnecessary at this point in time. Hell, even 120Hz tvs have had issues with jagged motion because of the way some HDTV and movies are recorded. The only time you risk burn in on a plasma these days is if you get a crappy one like a Vizio or something along those lines. Plasmas still get richer colors than LCDs and higher contrast without risking washout on the colors. Situationally, they can be better than LCDs. Overall LCD TVs are definitely superior, but Plasma TVs are certainly not "dead", at least not until oLED hits the main consumer market.

Like I said, I have to agree to disagree with you on this. 240Hz is amazing with Blu-Ray.

The reason I said you still have risk of burn in with Plasmas is because most people won't listen and get a quality plasma. They'll get a Vizio because they're stubborn and it will burn in... and then they'll complain.

That's completely aside from the point. If you get a piece of crap TV its going to suck no matter what you do. Whether or not it's plasma is irrelevant.

240Hz is seriously no better than 120Hz with Blu Ray; I've used both. With some they're even problematic because not all Blu Ray movies are in 24Hz and are actually the standard 28.8Hz which makes random choppiness show up on the TV. The main issue with LCDs is that they suck at stretching low resolution images, which a majority of TV is still broadcast in.

I didn't mean to leave Pioneer Elite out. They were the absolute best a few years ago.Unfortunately when Tweeter went tits up I lost my Elite dealer status.I can't honestly comment on their quality at this time. However, when I did have them they were AWESOME!

Yes, Pioneer are simply amazing in quality, but you are definitely going to pay for it. Still definitely the best TVs I've ever seen in a store.
