Southern Yellow Pine is the most frequently used tree to make utility poles. However they are covered in some type of chemical to preserve them from rotting and insects and stuff. Whats interesting is they last for like 25 to 50 years so they are always being inspected.
Other trees used to make them are (usually trees that are long and straight):
Douglas fir
Jack Pine
Lodgepole Pine
Western Red Cedar
Pacific Silver Fir
