How can I reduce latency in World of Warcraft, VoIP, or internet in general? Also known as lag.

spongebob: Lately, like 4-6 days, I have been playing WoW, and using a Voip program called vent. I have seriouly been lagging so bad that I "Lag out" also known as timing out or disconnecting from the server. Recently i have done a constant ping to see time outs, and its kinda frequent like 20% or so. I have also ran multiple spyware/malware programs with anti virus. Im just not finding anything. I even used another PC on the network and "Supposedly" nothing is wrong.

It just rather recently with the blizzard downloader that its downloading a patch which i have stopped / canceled the process.

Any IT-ers out there with a clue why im getting these infrequent to frequent "net drops." it seems to occur all times of the day and night.

Most likely related to breaks in your internet connection. This is more of something you may want to contact your ISP about to get your connection and or network checked out.

Is your connection wireless or wired?

Its wired, and not at a college. So before i was at college on a wireless connection but no where near as bad as this, but definately bad. I know i should contact the ISP. i have a great feeling of, "Reboot your ..." being either a router, modem, computer, dog... i mean i have heard and pply said it all too. but i cannot figure it out even having IT experience.

And i know on Peak times lagg is definately encountered more, but in my area at like 12 -1 am i should not be having a ping of 1200-3600ms on wow.

Since i posted, I must have lagged out 2-3 times a minute when fighting a boss. or at least 50+ times since my first question posting.

I wish i had a clue. i mean i have assumptions and went about typical troubleshooting, but seriously its bothering me to no end.

When you're playing games, turn the graphic setting down. That ALWAYS works for me.

Why would that affect your internet connection though?

I guess it wouldn't, but it would definitely increase the speed of game.

Well let me comment on this. Latency is the time that packets take from Client to Host... Think of it like a "ping." AKA lag or ZMGWTFLAGG (imo).

FPS is on the client side of gaming where its the graphic loading via the gpu and or the CPU. ** Lowering the graphic load via video settings does Improve FPS ---> FPS =/= Lagg**, but with Lag your eye will interpret it as same FPS but without any interaction, IE you can run and appears you are interacting with the world but everyone else is either running in circles, spinning, or something bizzar.

Typically, Latency occurs via home network (modem, NIC, router/firewall) and external network (ISP or server side gaming aka host). And with my issue, 2 weeks ago or so, it was External Network, whether it was my ISP or Blizzard, to me, it was narrowed down to the ISP (considering my work uses comcast and was experiencing issues). But still hard to know exactly.

So is it better now?

If not...get Road Runner :D

My download speed yesterday was around 103 Mb/s

What is the speed of internet you have? This actually won't matter, since I have played World of Warcraft on dial up and not had a terrible connection. I am just curious.

I worked for Comcast in the internet department for a while, and twice in the 5 months I worked there, they had problems directly related to world of warcraft. This guy had 8MB internet and was getting 10k latency (also known as red barred). And it was all on the ISP end.

The only things I could recommend are forwarding your router's ports for world of warcraft, and making sure your firewall on your computer is open to WoW.

Also, make sure you dont have a Torrent application running, as seeding will destroy your upload speed. (this goes with all computers on your network)

Oh, if you are hosting the Vent server yourself (I doubt you are, just throwing this possibility in) then your internet speed would be trashed.
