NEW ANSWER IN: If bread goes into a toaster, and toast comes out of it, at what point in the toasting process does bread become toast?
Tom: As soon as the bread has undergone a change which cannot be reversed, i.e. the moment it has been toasted even slightly, it is classed as toast, but at the end of the day toast is still bread - it doesn't ever stop being bread, it's just a word we use for bread that has been grilled.
