Why do some PC games require the disk to be in the drive to play?

Parasyte: Spore (which I got through a disk; not download) doesn't require the disk to be in the drive to play, but all my other PC games do.

Also, why do console games not need the game installed onto the hard drive to play, but PC games do? Why can't PC games just read off the disk, like ... (3 answers)

Is there a way to activate a game I got on a disk on Steam?

Parasyte: I have a game on a disk. And this game IS available for purchase on Steam. So is there any way to get it on my Steam account, so I can have achievements and play with friends and stuff?

And I tried "add a non-Steam game" but that didn't let me have achievements and all that fanc... (1 answer)
